Privacy Policy for Reddit Thread Mailer

Effective Date: September 24, 2025

Summary

Welcome to Reddit Thread Mailer! This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our Chrome extension to summarize Reddit threads and receive them via email. Your privacy is our priority. The extension sends the selected thread URL to our backend service for summarization and email delivery, but the developer does not collect or store personal data beyond what's necessary for this functionality. Authentication is handled via Google OAuth, with the JWT token and email stored locally in your browser using chrome.storage.sync. No user activity logs or thread content is retained by the extension or developer.

1. Information We Process

Reddit Thread Mailer is designed to minimize data processing. We only handle the following:

  • Thread URL: The URL of the Reddit thread you choose to summarize. This is sent to the backend to fetch public thread data.
  • User Email: The email address you provide (or from Google OAuth) for delivering the summary.
  • Auth Token: A JWT token obtained via Google OAuth for secure authentication with the backend.

The backend fetches publicly available data from the Reddit API; no private or personal Reddit user data is accessed or processed.

2. How We Use Your Information

Your information is used solely to provide the extension's core functionality:

  • Summarization and Delivery: The thread URL is sent to the backend, which retrieves the public thread content, generates a summary using a Large Language Model (LLM), and emails it to your specified address.
  • Authentication: The JWT token and email are used to verify your identity and ensure secure, authorized requests to the backend.

No other uses are made of your data, and it is not used for advertising, analytics, or any non-essential purposes.

3. Data Storage and Security

We handle data storage with security and minimalism in mind:

  • Local Browser Storage: Your JWT token and email are stored locally on your device using chrome.storage.sync. This syncs across your signed-in Chrome devices but remains under your control.
  • Backend Storage: The backend temporarily stores minimal user information (e.g., user ID and email) only for the purpose of processing and delivering the email summary. No personally identifiable information (PII) beyond the email is collected or retained, and data is deleted after successful delivery. Thread content or summaries are not stored long-term.

Security relies on Chrome's built-in protections for local storage and standard backend encryption practices (e.g., HTTPS). The extension does not implement additional encryption layers.

4. Third-Party Services

To deliver our service, we integrate with the following third parties. Data shared with them is limited to what's necessary:

  • Reddit API: Used to fetch public thread data based on the provided URL.
  • Google OAuth: For user authentication; only the JWT token and email are obtained and stored locally.
  • Backend LLM (e.g., OpenAI): The thread content is sent to the LLM provider for summarization processing.
  • Email Service (SMTP): Used to send the summary email to your address.

We do not control these services and are not responsible for their data practices. Please review their privacy policies for details.

5. Data Sharing

We do not share your data with any third parties beyond the essential services listed above. The extension and backend do not log, store, or share thread content, summaries, or any user data for purposes outside of immediate processing and delivery. No data is sold or used for marketing.

6. User Rights

As the extension stores data locally and the backend handles only transient, minimal information for delivery, traditional rights like access, rectification, or erasure apply primarily to local storage, which you can manage directly:

  • Clear your data anytime via the extension's options page or Chrome's storage settings.
  • For backend-stored data (e.g., email for delivery), contact us to request deletion.

We comply with applicable privacy laws, including those required for Chrome Web Store policies.

7. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. We will notify you of significant updates by posting the new version in the extension's options or via Chrome Web Store notifications. Please review this policy periodically.
