This Privacy Policy explains how the Reddit Thread Summarizer ("the Extension") handles information. Your privacy is important to us, and our policy is simple: the developer does not collect, store, or have access to any of your personal data. All processing happens locally on your computer or between your browser and the third-party AI services you choose to configure.

1. Information the Extension Processes

The Extension needs to handle certain data to function. This data is stored locally in your browser and is never transmitted to or seen by the developer.

  • User-Provided API Keys: You must voluntarily provide your own API key for Google Gemini and/or Cerebras AI for the extension to work. These keys are considered sensitive credentials.
  • User Settings: The Extension stores your preferences, such as summary length, language, and other UI settings.
  • Website Content (Reddit Data): When you activate the summary feature on a Reddit post, the Extension fetches the publicly available text content of that post's comments.
  • Cached Summaries: To improve performance, the Extension stores generated summaries locally.

The Extension does not collect, transmit, or store any personally identifiable information (PII), browsing history, or user activity data to any server controlled by the developer.

2. How Information is Used

The data processed by the Extension is used exclusively for its core functionality:

  • API Keys: Your API keys are used to authenticate with the Google Gemini and Cerebras APIs on your behalf to request a summary.
  • User Settings: Your settings are used to customize the behavior and appearance of the Extension according to your preferences.
  • Reddit Comment Data: The text of the comments is sent to the AI service you have configured for the sole purpose of generating a summary.
  • Cached Summaries: Cached data is used to display summaries for previously-viewed links instantly, improving performance and reducing your API usage.

3. Data Storage and Security

All data handled by the Extension is stored using the official Chrome Storage API, which is secure and sandboxed.

  • API Keys and Settings (chrome.storage.sync): Your API keys and settings are stored in sync storage. This data is encrypted by Google and synchronized across devices where you are logged into your Google account. The developer has no access to this data.
  • Cached Summaries (chrome.storage.local): Generated summaries are stored in local storage, which is confined to your local machine. This data is cleared if the extension is uninstalled.

4. Third-Party Services

The Extension acts as a client that interacts with third-party services on your behalf. Your use of these services is subject to their respective privacy policies.

  • Reddit: The Extension fetches public comment data from Reddit's .json API.
  • Google Gemini: If you provide a Gemini API key, comment data is sent to Google's servers for processing. Your use is governed by the Google Privacy Policy and Google APIs Terms of Service.
  • Cerebras AI: If you provide a Cerebras API key, comment data is sent to Cerebras's servers for processing. Your use is governed by the Cerebras Privacy Policy.
